Roy Grinnell

Roy Grinnell est un formidable artiste américain. J'ai découvert les oeuvres de Roy Grinnell dans des livres d'aviation ramenés lors de voyages aux USA (comme par exemple "Flying Aces" paru aux Editions Friedman/Fairfax). Il sait dans ses oeuvres décrire avec une précision extrême les détails de l'histoire de l'aviation. Mais son talent lui permettent également d'exprimer la vitesse ou la lumière avec un grand réalisme.
Roy Grinnell is a tremendous American artist. I discovered Roy Grinnell's artworks in aviation books that I brought back from different trips in USA (such as for example "Flying Aces" printed by the Friedman/Fairfax editions). He knows in his artworks how to describe with an extreme precision the details of the aviation history. But his talent also allows him to show the speed or the light with a great realism.

J'ai contacté Roy Grinnell par email en février 2011 afin de lui demander l'autorisation de mettre ses oeuvres en ligne. C'est sa femme Irene qui m'a gentiment répondu et donné leur accord. Mais Irene m'a également mis en relation avec Bernard Delfino, fondateur de l'aile française de la Commemorative Air Force. Suite à nos différents contacts, j'ai le grand plaisir d'avoir rejoint cette association prestigieuse et réputée dont Roy Grinnell est l'un des artistes attitrés.
I contacted Roy Grinnell by email in February, 2011 to ask him for the authorization to put his artworks on my website. His wife Irene kindly answered me and gave me their agreement. But Irene also allowed me to contact Bernard Delfino, the founder of the French Wing of the Commemorative Air Force. After various contacts, I have the great pleasure to have joined this prestigious and renowned association in which Roy Grinnell is one of the official artists.

Roy Grinnell est né à Santa Barbara, Californie (ville que j'ai personnellement visité en 1986 et 2008). Enfant, il dessinait des avions. A 11 ans, il peignait pour sa grand-mère suédoise un tableau d'un P-51 suédois abattant un Me 109.
Roy Grinnell was born in Santa Barbara, California (a city I personally visited in 1986 and 2008). As a child, he was already drawing aircrafts. At 11, he painted a P-51 shooting down a Me 109 for his swedish grandmother.

Après avoir servi dans la Marine, il a suivit les cours de la Art Center School of Design de Los Angeles. Toujours soucieux de préserver l'aspect historique, Roy Grinnell est reconnu partout dans le monde comme un Artiste d'Aviation exceptionnel. C'est aussi l'artiste officiel de plusieurs associations, dont bien sûr la Commemorative Air Force.
After serving in the Navy, he attended the Art Center School of Design in Los Angeles. Always taking care of preserving the historical aspect of aviation, Roy Grinnell has developped a worldwide fame and became an exceptional Aviation Artist. He is today the official artist of numerous associations, including of course the Commemorative Air Force.

Son talent a valu à Roy Grinnell de nombreuses récompenses : en 1999 la RG Smith Award for Naval Aviation Art (National Museum of Naval Aviation, Pensacola, Floride), en 2003 la First Place du Naval Museum de Pensacola avec l'oeuvre "Joe Foss - un fier américain", en 2004 le titre d'as d'honneur (Honorary Ace) de l'association américaine des as de la chasse (American Fighter Aces Association), la "Spirit of Flight" de la Commemorative Air Force (Midland, Texas) et enfin en 2008 l'Horizon of Flight Aviation Art pour sa peinture "The Struggle Begins".

His talent allowed Roy Grinnell to be granted with numerous awards : in 1999 the RG Smith Award for Naval Aviation Art (National Museum of Naval Aviation, Pensacola, Florida), in 2003 the First Place at the Naval Museum in Pensacola with the painting "Joe Foss - A Proud American", in 2004 he was made an "Honorary Ace" by the American Fighter Aces Association, the "Spirit of Flight" award of the Commemorative Air Force (Midland, Texas) and lastly in 2008 the Horizon of Flight Aviation Art for his painting "The Struggle Begins".
